New Opel ECOTEC 1.6 SIDI Performance Turbo - engine with 147 kW/ 200 hp and 300 Nm max. torque |
147 kW/200 hp, 300 Nm maximum torque and 235 km/h top speed – the especially powerful version of the new Opel ECOTEC 1.6 SIDI Performance Turbo engine generation makes its world premiere in the Opel Cascada at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) from September 12 – 22. This is the first time Opel will show the high-performance version of the new mid-size convertible that tops the Cascada gasoline portfolio, and that is also clearly recognizable thanks to two exhaust tailpipes.

The engine is one of the completely newly designed Opel four-cylinder units with gasoline direct injection (SIDI = Spark Ignition Direct Injection) and in this second, new variant it marks the power peak of Opel’s 1.6-liter class. It joins the 1.6 SIDI turbo with 125 kW/170 hp that was already introduced during the Cascada’s market launch in the spring. Both new engines are released for unlimited usage of regular and super gasoline fuel.
“The completely new, even more powerful 1.6 SIDI turbo with 200 hp debuting at the IAA makes our mid-size Cascada an extremely attractive offer to convertible buyers. The new top-of-the-line gasoline engine expands the Cascada powertrain portfolio with a high-output and torque champion, now putting two very powerful engines at the top of our gasoline and diesel ranges – the SIDI turbo with 200 hp and 300 Nm torque as well as the BiTurbo CDTI with 195 hp and 400 Nm. The Cascada is thus a rare combination of high performance and open-air driving fun.” says Martin Vögler, Global Chief Engineer MGE Engines.

First-class: Highest-level torque, power output and refinement
The new 147 kW/200 hp 1.6 SIDI turbo not only delivers 11 percent more power, but also 300 Nm maximum torque with overboost – 70 Nm more than the comparable 1.6-liter turbo predecessor which is an increase of no less than 30 percent. At the same time, the new engine with a power output per liter of 125 hp is top-in-class in its competitive environment. With this the Cascada reaches a top speed of 235 km/h. In spite of these strong performance figures, the mid-size convertible makes do with 6.7 liters fuel per 100 km (158 g/km CO2, preliminary figures, according to Regulation [EC] No 715/2007).

The heart of the SIDI turbo is a new engine block that can withstand a maximum combustion pressure of up to 130 bar in the cylinder. The block is made of grey cast iron with an aluminum baseplate. In contrast to the 170 hp version, a different type of piston was developed for the 200 hp model and the compression ratio was reduced from 10.5 to 9.5:1. Opel engineers also wanted to combine the high power output with pleasant running smoothness for exceptional comfort. To this end, they made numerous optimizations to the induction and exhaust systems. As a result, driver and passengers will appreciate quiet and smooth idling, with a pleasant sound quality even at high road speeds, engine speeds and loads. The exclusive HiPerStrut (High Performance Strut) front suspension further enhances these refined driving characteristics.
The new 1.6 SIDI turbo with 147 kW/200 hp rounds off the Cascada engine portfolio as its strongest member, so that now four powertrains are available on the gasoline side. It joins the 1.4 turbo with 88 kW/120 hp and 103 kW/140 hp as well as the 125 kW/170 hp 1.6-liter gasoline direct injection unit. On the diesel side, the 2.0-liter turbo diesel with 121 kW/165 hp and the 143 kW/195 hp 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI are available. Both consume just 5.2 liters fuel per 100 km, and with CO2 emissions of 138 g/km, earning a grade A EU energy label.

The 200 hp gasoline direct injection unit is part of Opel’s model and powertrain offensive. Within five years, the automaker is introducing 23 new models to the market. Through 2016 Opel will also introduce three completely new engine families and 13 new powertrains, thus renewing 80 percent of its entire powertrain portfolio. The new 1.6 SIDI turbo downsized engines are distinguished by high power density as well as superb refinement combined with economical fuel consumption and low CO2 emissions. At the same time, numerous ultra-modern manual and automatic transmissions are being introduced. The Cascada 1.6 SIDI turbo with 147 kW/200 hp and six-speed manual transmission can be ordered from the fall. The engine makes its debut to the public at the IAA in the mid-size cabrio and will be successively introduced in various Opel models.
